ABSTRACT
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has fundamentally transformed the landscape of visual creativity in the digital era. This study aims to analyze the threats, challenges, and opportunities of AI for Generation Z (born 1997–2012) and Gen Alpha (2013–present) artists and designers through an ethical lens and new civilization perspective. Employing a qualitative literature review approach grounded in Jean Baudrillard’s simulacra theory, Yuval Noah Harari’s alien intelligence concept, Marshall McLuhan’s medium theory, and maqasid al-shariah principles in Islamic ethics, the study reveals that AI poses real threats including job displacement, authenticity crisis (precession of simulacra), and creative outsourcing among youth. Nevertheless, AI offers opportunities for democratization and human augmentation when managed ethically. Islamic perspective emphasizes conditional permissibility with emphasis on accountability (mas’uliyyah), justice (‘adl), human dignity (karamah al-insan), and trust (amana). Empirical case studies from Indonesian practitioners (Gen Z designer in Jakarta, digital batik artist in Yogyakarta, and 2025 DKV student survey) strengthen the theoretical findings. Key implications include the need for design education reform, adaptive copyright regulation, and development of human-AI symbiosis models that preserve human dignity. The findings contribute theoretically to visual communication design studies and technology ethics in Indonesia.
